Genealogy Project Grants

The Georgia Genealogical Society, Inc. (GGS) is offering grant funds for genealogical projects either as a Publication Grant, Purchase Grant, or General Project twice a year. Application must be received by March 15th or September 15th for consideration.

Grant requests requirements are described below:

  • The data of each project must be of a genealogical nature;
  • The data of each project must concern primarily persons who were citizens of Georgia prior to 1851, this means that records could be included through 1920.
  • An applicant may be an individual, group of individuals, or a reputable organization.
  • The project may utilize either public or private records.
  • The final result of the project should be either a hardbound book, printed on archival paper or electronic data for online publication.
  • The project may be published in the form of an index, abstract, transcription, or narrative. No matter the form of the project a full name index must be included.
  • A copy of the project in the final form (including electronic projects) will become a part of the permanent records of The Georgia Archives.
  • Any digital project must be available to a user for free.

Records or projects ineligible for consideration:

  • Census records
  • County histories
  • Church histories
  • Family histories or journals
  • Various records pertaining only to a particular group of persons
  • Records that have already been published
  • Reprint of previously published, out-of-print titles or second editions

Author is responsible for:

  • Acquiring ISBN number
  • Acquiring the copyright for the publication

Grant types:

Publication Grant is for a hardback book meeting the above requirements. The book will be either in 6 X 9 or 8.5 X 11 format. The printer for the book will be determined by Georgia Genealogical Society (GGS). The request should include the amount to mail the book to the fifty-six approved libraries. Funds for mailing will be held by GGS until receipt of actual cost is received from the applicant.

Purchase Grant is available for the Georgia Genealogical Society to consider purchasing copies of applicant’s recently published, privately funded book for library distribution. The book must be printed as a hardbound book, printed on archival paper, in either 6 X 9 or 8.5 X 11 format.  Georgia Genealogical Society, if grant is approved, will purchase the book at the cost to print the book, not the retail cost of the book. GGS will send funds to the Grant requester upon receipt of cost of mailing the books to the approved libraries (that have not purchased the book earlier).

General Project is a request for grant funds to digitize material that meets the above grant request requirements and will be available to all on the applicant’s website and/or at the Georgia Archives.
