Governor's Instructions to the Commissioners

1st. The Lands to be valued in General According to their Quality and Situation from One to Five Shillings per Acre, so as the whole, supposing a Million of Acres to Average at 3/ Sterling pr. Acre.

2nd. Lands of the best Quality whereon is an Extraordinary Mill Seat at Ten Shillings per Acre as far as One Hundred Acres.

3rd. Lands of an indefrent Quality whereon is but an indefrent Mill Seat five Shillings per Acre, and so in proportion for every 100 acres, whereon Milles cann be Erected.

4th. All Lands Situated on Savannah River from Four Miles above and below the Town of Dartmouth to be rated at One Shilling and Sixpence pr. acre over and Above the Valued Quality.

5th. All Land situated on Savannah River from Four to Eight miles above and below said Town, One Shilling more than the Valued Quality, & from 8 to Twelve miles at Winepence more than the Valued Quality.

6th. Lands situated on the River Dart 4 miles above the said Town on each side the River, One Shilling more then the Valued Quality, from four to 8 miles [9d?], and from Eight to 12 Miles, Six Pence more than the Valued Quality.

7th. That Eight Hundred Acres be laid out and Reserved for the Town of Dartmouth and other Publick uses in the Fork of Savannah and Broad Rivers.

8th. That all Single Familys applying for Land may be allowed from Three to Six or Nine Months, if Necessary, to Come in and Settle with their Familys.

9th. Lands on Reserve for Three Months for Single Familys, the Reserve, as usual, 40/ per Hundred Acres, and if Unable & it appears Satisfactory to the Commissioners, they may be allowed 3 months more.

10th. Immediate Settlers are to pay Ten Pounds per 100 acres, and the Remainder when the Lands are Surveyed and Valued.

11th. All Persons Paying Down £10 pr. 100 acres by way of Deposit be allowed [e?] months in Lieu of One month to Pay the Remainder after the Lands are Surveyed and Valued; this Concerns only Immediate Settlers.

These (12 & 13) Chiefly Concern Edward Barnard esquire, Captain of his Majesty's Troop of Rangers.

12th. That 200 Acres of Land be Reserved for the uses of the Publick on a High Hill at a Small Runn on the North Side of the North Fork & Branch of Ogeechee River, About One and a half Miles Above the falls on said North Branch of the River, whereon a Stockade Fort may be Errected for the Rendesvous of an officer and Twenty men to be sent there by the Desire and on the application of the Inhabitants in Wrightsborough, and Those two have already taken up Lands about Ogeechee and Places Adjacent; who have Agreed to errect or assist in Errecting the Said Fort and other Buildings for the Shelter of the Rangers, The fort to be 100 foot square.

13th. That a Fort be Errected at the Point of the fork of Savannah and the Rivers Dart, at Place already Marked out by his Excellency the Governor, The Fort to be 120 feet Square with four Bastions made of Square Loggs, Two of them to be covered and 3 left open on the Top. The Curtains lines of Puntions, and officers House Kitchen Barracks Goal House and Magazine.

14th. That the Lands heretofore reserved for Miller and Beard be not allowed to any Person, but on Condition that in case they apply to his Excellency the Governor in Council, on the first Thursday in December next, and their Reserves is continued such Entry to be made void.

15th. That the Commissioners do Endeavor to Chuse out Persons of the Best Repute for Honesty to be Chain Carryiers and that they put them on their Guard Respecting that Service, and also occasionally to make Tryal of their fidelity by resurveying or going over some of the lines Surveyed, and to Assure them that upon their Honesty and satisfactory Performance, they will be Liberally Rewarded over and above their Daily Pay, and if Detected in any Fraud, their Pay will be stopd. and themselves Prosecuted for Perjury.
