In 1910, James A. LaConte transcribed the records of the land court charged with distributing the "Ceded Lands," the area of Georgia that became original Wilkes County. At that time, the records were located in Greene County and were already in bad condition, with broken pieces and missing parts.
In the 1950s, the land court records were transferred to the Surveyor General's office and are now stored at the Georgia Archives. Because of their fragile condition, the original papers are not available for public viewing.
